I have always been afraid of announcing new projects because “What if I don’t finish it?” Well, it’s come to my attention that it is going to happen anyway, and some people actually care. So here are some of the projects I have been working on this year outside of Hypersonic Express and NaNoWriMo.
Part of my writing process is to be currently working on multiple projects at a time. I do this so that I can attempt to write something every day by picking whichever project doesn’t hate me that day. By which I mean, whichever project is the least frustrating.
- A futuristic sci-fi novel, which can be roughly summarized as: Space pirates sail through nightmare-inducing wormholes to discover the secrets of the immortal Queens that rule the corporate galaxy. It follows a genderfluid protagonist who wants to be the next galactic judge but is afraid doing so will mean xe have to leave xer morals and xer loved ones behind.
I have been working on this project since Spring of last year. After its 4th draft, it is now a 120k word epic of reasonable quality. I plan to continue to work on it this winter and begin querying it to agents next spring/summer. - My second project is my ToBe pile, which is a whole bunch of projects that I occassionally pick through when my main projects aren’t cooperating. Though this may be cheating to call it one project, it includes: a first-draft sequel to the former sci-fi project; A standalone sci-fi novella (50k words) that asks the question: are comatose patients at risk of being used by alien parasites? And finally, a short story collection made up of some of the 20+ short stories (2-5k words) I’ve written in the past 8 years that I haven’t done anything with.
- My most exciting project to announce is my next flash fiction collection called When Hope Burns White. The stories are inspired by the art of the card game Dixit, which is all about storytelling. I wrote a new flash fiction story (less than 1 page) every week this summer and collected the best ones together. Even though the setting is completely different from story to story, each one deals with themes of isolation, the little hopes, and the acceptance of a life where the coals of hope have burned to ash.
I’m really excited about this project and plan to send the stories to a professional editor before the end of the month so I can redraft them and publish them starting in February. This will take the same format as Flashes of the Hypersonic Express, and I cannot wait to share them with you.
In addition to these writing projects, I’m also regularly updating my social media accounts with various content. So at the end of the day, there’s a lot going on.
Which of these projects sound the most interesting to you?
