Holiday Spirit

Whenever we enter a new season, there are specific things that make me feel festive. During October, that means visiting a Spirit Halloween, even if I do not buy much. During Christmas for many people, that means putting lights on a tree and singing along to Mariah Carey.

When I was a kid, if it did not snow in December, then it was not Christmas, and while that happened semi-frequently back in Oregon, there is not much chance of it happening in the Bay. Which means I need other traditions to make this time feel special.

Thankfully, I have found two.

1. Peppermint Candies

Peppermint is a favorite of mine, and nothing makes it feel more like the holidays than a peppermind mocha and Hershey’s Candy Cane Kisses. And while it is near impossible to beat the flavor and texture of Ghirardelli’s Peppermint Bark, something about the candy cane kisses really sets the mood.

2. Sweaters

My collection of Christmas sweaters grows each year, and now I have a lovely 5-piece set, so I exude a different Christmas vibe every school day. Student reactions range from “What are you wearing?” to “Nice drip” almost regardless of which choice I make.

And while the Nightmare Before Christmas sweater that lights up is my current favorite, the Opposuit on the right is a close contender. The suit was a gift from a fellow teacher back in Oregon, and the ostentatiousness makes most people smile when they see it.

That is what the holiday season is supposed to be about, right?

What festival elements — other than Christmas trees and music — make the season feel special to you?
