Of Moon and Leaf

Tabletop Roleplaying has been a major portion of my life for years. As a father, I am often too tired or too busy to schedule time to play with friends as frequently as I would like. So I have turned to solo roleplaying.

A few months ago, I mentioned Ironsworn, which is an excellent system for solo play and improved by their Delve expansion, which I recently purchased. However, there are evenings when I am too mentally exhausted for the strategizing that is required by the game, but I still want to enjoy some sort of adventure.

Of Moon and Leaf is the perfect answer and a cozy experience.

Of Moon and Leaf is a roleplaying game for when you want to go on an adventure, but you do not want to think three steps ahead. It is about the journey, about discovery, and about enjoying the little things. The premise is: you wander around a forest during the day, you find interesting places, plants, and materials, and you return home at night to craft potions or tools, or whatever it is you fancy.

There is no combat, no overarching goals, and no pressure to do anything at all. When I first began, I was a bit skeptical because I love strategy and defeating bosses and all that. But this scratches an itch I did not know I had.

The game encourages drawing and coloring your discoveries, which has created an incredibly interactive and aesthetically pleasing journaling experience. I bought a fountain pen just for this, and it has made it even more special.

This might be the game for you, if you are looking for:

  • something to wind down with at the end of day,
  • something that is right-brain focused,
  • something that feels positive and magical,
  • something that does not include screen time,

Have you found any ttrpgs that scratch a similar itch?
